The Dangers of Google Search

Updated: Feb 24, 2023

Cybercriminals are buying ad slots from Google to make you think their sites are legitimate. The bad guys go to a lot of trouble to create fraudulent log in pages that look exactly like the real thing.

Instead of just hoping that you will randomly land on their credential-harvesting mockup of a popular site, they purchase ad slots from Google so their ads appear above the search results.

Naturally, online criminals want to steal as much as possible, as easily as possible. One way to do this is to impersonate login pages for popular password managers. If a criminal can steal the credentials for your password manager, they've hit the jackpot.

The best way to avoid falling into these kinds of traps is to ignore anything labeled as an "ad" or "sponsored" in Google search results. Be safe out there!
